“I’d quite like to try doing a 50’s style look
“I’d quite like to try doing a 50’s style look with my makeup but I don’t know how to go about it. Can you help?” - Lost Summer Memories
Maybe! I’m not a makeup artist at all so I’ll just tell you what I would do if I got invited to a 50’s theme party, like, tomorrow. I think the quintessential look for this era is pure skin, a decently significant brow, and a red lip … sometimes the eye is quite nude, or dusted with white shadow. But why not modernize it just a bit?
1. Base - I like Make Up For Ever HD Foundation when you really want to get a uniform look with a slightly matte finish. Keep the blush simple and minimal.
2. Eyes - An intense pearl white like Stila Jewel Eye in Opal all over lid and into inner corners, followed by mascara. If you want to update it for fun, I love the idea of a blue or teal liner - Make Up For Ever Aqua Creams are great.
3. Brows - The 50’s brow is full and fluffy. I like to brush upwards, fill with pencil in tiny strokes, and brush upwards again. This is a good all-in-one solution: Smashbox Brow Tech to Go.
4. Lips - If you do nothing else, do a true red lip! I love YSL Pur Couture in Rouge Vernis, and I’m also a huge fan of the Bite invisible lip pencil.
If you have any tips for a 50’s look, or if your approach is totally different, perhaps share in the comments?
