File under/cult destinations
One of my favorite creative geniuses is a gal named Casey Shagena - and it turns out she can curate cult beauty as well as she can create it.
She founded Menagerie in Portland, ORE in a converted airstream trailer (hello, dream life) and both the shop and the site are a destination for small batch beauty and fragrance brands as well as other hand-made products. She recently sent me a few of her favorites:
Blackbird Perfume’s Moto Oud was created to smell like a broken down motorcycle in the desert - but I’ll add a part about some dreamy person showing up like a mirage but it’s real and everything ends happily ever after because you smell so good (like leather, spice and oud).
If you’re looking for a less rough-and-tumble experience on the road to smelling good, this Meow Meow Tweet Deodorant Cream in Lavender is a revelation - I had never tried a formula like this before and it really works. It’s made in Brooklyn with organic coconut oil and baking soda (antibacterial to kill stinky stuff) and arrowroot powder and clay (to soak up the sweat, aka keep you dry). It’s only $13 and a little goes a long way
If you’re in the Portland area and looking for an inspiring beauty shop, look no further - but if you have an internet connection and want to browse carefully chosen beauty, just clickety click.
